Left hand table shows dies with default diameter, usually the smallest practical diameter, and which will normally be
provided if only the threading diameter is specified. The right hand table shows other outside diameters (usually larger)
which are also often available from stock.
These dies have a single split at the perimeter and two adjacent dimples, offering a very small amount of adjustment by means of
the screw(s) provided in the diestock. It is possible to provide dies without the split to special order, but this is not usual except in
the case of taper pipe threads.
“GUN NOSE” entry thread dies, which have a different action, analogous to spiral point taps, may be produced to special order.
“GROUND THREAD” relating to dies.
Such dies as are offered above are frequently (and perhaps generally) referred to as ‘High Speed Steel Ground Thread’ but this
is not technically correct. It is important to make it clear that these threads are made using a master tap specially designed for the
purpose and that the threads themselves are not internally ground. The chamfer lead may be ground, and the threads can be
lapped as an extra operation which may improve the surface finish if demanded.
It is certainly possible to manufacture threading dies by internal grinding, but that is entirely special and is very rarely done, and
is not that which is offered in these pages.
