180A Stub Drills

Wire Gauge (Number and Letter sizes) are no longer routinely made for stock, although some stocks remain. Please see our technical
pages for the decimal sizes and metric nearest equivalents of wire gauge. Unlisted sizes, including wire sizes, may be made to special
order, the quantity ordered will determine the unit price.

The value of stub drills is often underestimated. For tough jobs the universal rule is— use a drill as short as possible, and
certainly no longer than it needs to be. A shorter drill flexes less and will work better in tough materials, especially when
used in hand-directed tools. Applications in sheet metal are common. If the longer flute length/reach of a jobber drill is
not required, then consideration should be given to the use of stub drills. It is unfortunate that the relative unpopularity of
stub drills leads to smaller batch quantities and therefore, rather higher prices for all except the commonest sizes, but
they can often be worth that extra

Stub drills are very sturdy tools that have the same shank diameter as the cutting diameter. Therefore the larger stubs
are not suitable for machines with limited chucking capacity. For drilling larger diameters with 13mm and 16mm chucks
we offer a range of blacksmith drills, series No. 265A, which are short drills up to 1,1/2” / 38mm diameter, having
shanks with diameter 1/2” (12,7mm). There are also a few very large sizes with 3/4” (19mm) shanks under No.265B.
