Core drills will not drill from solid, but used correctly will produce rounder, straighter, and more accurate holes
than are made by a normal 2-fluted drill. They are a much underestimated product, and are the tool of choice
when opening out an existing hole. Surface finish is also definitely improved, and in some circumstances the
employment of a reamer can be rendered unnecessary.
* note re- DIN344 drills vs. TRUBOR No.195A
The German standard DIN844 is based on the lengths used in DIN340 (i.e. long series / taper length),
whereas Trubor No. 195A are made to normal jobber length.. DIN344 drills are also usually equipped
with a tang on the shank. In case DIN344 is actually demanded, tools must be made to special order,
the quantity ordered determining the unit price.
For larger diameters, and a greater range of sizes, please see Taper Shank Core Drills (205A and 205B)
Core drilling should be executed at approximately the same drilling speeds as would be employed using a 2-fluted drill of the same
diameter. Feeds used should be intermediate between those recommended for a drill and for a reamer in similar circumstances.
Core drills will routinely open out existing holes or 75% of the core drill diameter, or greater.
