Building on a method developed in woodworking, these tools have found use in milling and routing of some
composite materials, laminates and aluminium, where the condition of the upper surface of the work would be
vulnerable to damage from the lifting/tearing action of a conventional upcut tool. Downcut tools push the cut
swarf/fibres forward and down. They cannot be used on all materials and are not suitable for general routing.
